Microneedling Q&A

What is microneedling?

Microneedling, also known as collagen induction therapy, uses an FDA-approved special device that evenly pierces the top layer of your skin with tiny micro-needles.

When your skin receives these extremely small puncture wounds, it quickly responds with healing, stimulating the production of collagen and elastin. The results offer you tight skin, reduced wrinkles, and fewer visual scars for overall skin rejuvenation.

Is microneedling right for me?

Microneedling treats a wide range of skin conditions resulting from collagen loss, including:

  • Acne scars
  • Fine lines
  • Wrinkles
  • Enlarged pores
  • Scarring
  • Age spots
  • Hyperpigmentation
  • Uneven texture

Microneedling improves the elasticity of your facial skin, but it can also reduce the appearance of stretch marks.

This treatment might work well for you if you’re not a candidate for lasers due to hyperpigmentation. You may also want to choose microneedling over microabrasion if you’d prefer a more aggressive treatment.

When your skin technician consults with you, you can decide on the best option for your condition and goals for treatment.

How does microneedling work?

At Dallas Family Medical & Aesthetics, the team of specialists use the SkinPen®, which is an FDA-approved microneedling device that penetrates your skin with microneedles.

Before your procedure, your skin technician applies a topical anesthetic to your face to make sure you stay comfortable. After about 30 minutes, you begin your treatment. Once you’re finished, you might experience redness on the treated areas for about 24-48 hours. For optimal results, you should seek treatments once a month for six months.

How does microneedling work with platelet-rich plasma (PRP)?

Your microneedling procedure opens up tiny paths to the deeper layers of your skin. Your skin technician at Dallas Family Medical & Aesthetics can use PRP to enhance the effectiveness of microneedling.

When the PRP enters your skin, it offers growth and healing factors that come from your blood to promote additional rejuvenation benefits. It helps your skin produce collagen and elastin quickly, and can also help you get rid of bulges and dark circles under your eyes.

Because this low-risk treatment comes from your own blood, you shouldn’t experience any side effects.
